One of the biggest arguments for the merger of the municipalities was consolidation. The hospitals use hundreds of applications that currently are different depending on which hospital is in question. However, these systems will be consolidated in the long term. The access to all data and applications will be the same whether you are in Herlev Hospital or Rigshospitalet.

“Our customers - the hospitals - work hard at saving lives every day. That’s why we have to service them in the best and most efficient way. Every cent spent on IT cannot be used for a hip replacement or a course of treatment for a cancer patient so we have to optimize our resources. That’s why we think long-term and make sure that the basics are in place.” Says Jan Hansen, Head of Service Management at Koncern IT.

If a new joint application at the present moment has to be made accessible to all hospitals in the region, it is difficult due to the current network – it requires a disproportionately large amount of resources. Therefore three data centers are now established in Herlev Hospital or Hvidovre Hospital and Rigshospitalet, respectively, where the new joint applications will be placed and access can be gained from all PC’s in the region. The data centers are expected to be ready for use in the end of 2008.

The first phase involved laying a black fiber net - a DWDM ring - between the three hospitals. It is in place and now the fiber net has to be connected to intelligent hardware. Koncern IT and NetDesign have reached a solution that both parties have worked on co-operatively since the beginning of 2006. When the three data centers have been imple-mented they will cover all 14 hospitals and institutions in the region.
